Plot Summary: Set in a boys’ prep school in 1959
Vermont, the movie focuses on seven friends, most pressured by their parents
into lucrative careers they do not want to pursue. John Keating, a former
student of the school, comes in as the new English teacher. His mantra is
“Carpe diem; seize the day.” Mr. Keating’s irreverent teaching style captivates
the boys and they are swept away by the power of words. The boys discover that
when a student at the school, Mr. Keating was in “The Dead Poets Society,” a
literary club that secretly met in a cave off campus. The boys decide to
re-form the club and it begins to impact their lives in ways they never before
expected.
Critical Evaluation: Dead
Poets Society was
both a commercial and critical success when it was released in 1989. It is a
coming-of-age movie that contains themes teenagers can relate to: the freedom
to show self-expression and the ever-present pressure from parents. The movie
was nominated for four Academy Awards (including Best Picture) and won one.
Viewer’s Annotation: A high school English teacher inspires
his students, with the help of poetry, to seize the day.
Genre: Drama
Reason for Item’s Inclusion: This movie has stunning cinematography, the
world’s best poetry, a talented cast, and a beautiful message. I love
everything about this movie. Everyone can relate to it on one level or another.
